I'm very interested in getting something like this:

    http://www.bicycle-engines.com/49cc-complete-powered-engine-p-156.html

There are other options as well, including an 80cc engine, and such.

I know that scooters, and "motorized bikes" require an M2 license in California. My question is, how many people actually get this license, and what are the chances that I'm really ever going to need it when I'm riding a bike? Would a cop really give me a ticket? Would he even know what it is? I read 1 story where a guy got pulled over on a moped and was told to wear a helmet, and that was it.

I have friends who have mopeds/scooters and don't have licenses and have been driving them for years with no problems.

Do you think I should go through the hassle of getting a license? I want to use it to ride to the beach & other local spots on an off-road bike trails and bike lanes. I know the answer is,yes, to be safe, but how many of you would actually get one?

Got this from the DMV website, no license required.

MOTORIZED BICYCLES There are two definitions of motorized bicycle (moped). A motorized bicycle is: • A two- or three-wheeled device, capable of no more than 30 mph on level ground, and equipped with:
-fully operative pedals for human propulsion. -an internal combustion engine producing less than two gross brake horsepower and an automatic transmission.
    - an electric motor, with or without pedals for human propulsion. (VC §406[a])

    • A vehicle with pedals and an electric motor (not more than 1,000 watts) which cannot be driven at speeds of more than 20 mph on level ground even if assisted by human power. The motor must stop when the brakes are applied or the starter switch is released. (VC §406[b]).

If you operate a motorized bicycle which meets the definition of VC §406[b], you:
    • Must be 16 years of age or older
    • Must wear a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet.
    • Are exempt from the motor vehicle financial responsibility, driver license, and moped plate requirements. (VC §12804.9)
You may ride a moped in a bicycle lane at a reasonable speed. Be careful of bicyclists using the lane.

I have researched this for a while now, and I have some parts, I have a homelite chainsaw engine, a bike with a flat support above the back tire (to mount the engine). The bike has front brakes. I want this to be very simple. I want my bike to be motorized and be one speed, since I dont want to spend the money to buy a clutch that varies in speeds. I am hoping to use the chain and sprocket off the bicycle and attach a sprocket to the crankshaft on the chainsaw engine. I will use a separate bike brake for the throttle, giving me 3 brakes total. To stop, my idea is to just lay off the throttle, and use the original bike brakes. Is there anything that may be an issue for this? Thank you.

You are going to need a mechanism to keep tension on the chain- maybe modifying a rear derailer. and a way to adjust it for alignment. Since you are going with one speed, maybe use a rear hub that has a foot brake in it that will replace the rear brake lever and will free up some handlebar space. Using a small metal container possibly in a saddle bag mounted higher than the engine will gravity feed the fuel without a pump. It will need to be vented.

I've been searching online at different motorized bicycle kits. I'm REALLY interested in getting one and trying it out! It looks like it could be a fun way to get around the beach and maybe even to work. I'm not too educated on engines, and what type is best for this project. I've seen so many different types and different prices all claiming to do the SAME thing! Here are a couple I've seen…

    $200.00 (includes shipping) – claims to reach 35-40 MPH…
    http://cgi.ebay.com/80cc-Motorized-Bicycle-Bike-Motor-Moped-Kit-Engine-NR_W0QQitemZ150228317748QQihZ005QQcategoryZ11329QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

$329.00 + shipping – claims to reach the same, but is a 4-stroke. Is this just for better tork?
    http://www.bicycle-engines.com/

$160.00 (Includes shipping) – same claims

You can see why it would be confusing!
Can anyone give me recommendations, ideas, or feedback on these different engines. What would you do? I'd rather not spend $400.

    THANK YOU!

I have the first kit in the link you posted from e bay.

One thing to consider – the 160 buck kit is 50cc and the 200 buck kit is 80cc. Go for the 80cc kit!

The thinks are a kick in the butt to ride and really do work.

    Tracking device for bicycle?
I am planning on purchasing a motorized bicycle (not a moped or scooter, a regular bike with a little engine attached, one of these: http://www.motoredbikes.com/gallery/my/i…

The problem is that I live in a very high bike theft area and I am really worried about it getting stolen, esspecially with the fancy engine and all. I have already lost two bikes worth nowhere near as much as this one will be.

The best idea I've heard so far is to buy one of those disposable cell phones with GPS and hide it somewhere on the bike so if it's stolen I can track it on the internet.

Any ideas for how I could securely hide the phone without the theif finding it right away?

Other ideas besides tracking? (I do plan on using two kryptonite u locks as well)

Is there any way to secure the engine from being started, or stolen off the bike, for that matter?
The photo link didn't work, try this one!
    http://www.kulukin.com/bikes/index_files/IMG_3070.JPG
I will have to park it outside sometimes. I will be parking it by the bart (bay area's subway thing) and it will sometimes need to be parked out overnight. I will basically be using it like a car, so I can't keep it at home ALL the time (what would be the point of driving it then?)

Also, it's waaay cheaper then a moped and requires no special liscense. It only hits 30mph so I feel safe on it.

Tracking, Kryptonite locks and "fancy engine and all" How much are you spending on this bike ?
Why dont you just buy a real motorcycle ?

maddog i nearly p***ed myself laughing at your answer !

Does anybody out there have experience with these?

I looked at motorized bikes and various scooters and decided on a small electric scooter. It depends on how far you want to go with it and what kind of traffic you will be facing. I do think that for shorter distances bikes and scooters are better than cars. And electric is better than gas.. but look around at the various kinds.
